Sainte-Marie, Buffy - Power In The Blood (CD)

Produktinformationen "Sainte-Marie, Buffy - Power In The Blood (CD)"

One of the most original and important voices of our time.

Equal parts activist, educator, songwriter, performer and visual artist, Buffy Sainte-Marie has throughout her life been an untiring champion for indigenous people and the environment, through her music, art, education projects, and by taking direct political action. She is one of the most enduring and popular Native American performers, her music having touched millions of people around the world.

From her start in New York City's Greenwich Village in the early to 1960s alongside Leonard Cohen, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, Buffy made a name for herself as a gifted songwriter, writing hits for Janis Joplin, Elvis Presley, Barbra Streisand, and Neil Diamond. Her most well know song is the Oscar winning 'Up Where We Belong' from An Officer and Gentlemen. But Buffy is most acclaimed for her song 'Universal Soldier' that became one of the first anti-Vietnam war anthems to inspire a generation to protest.

Power in the Blood - her first new album in 6 years, includes odes to the sanctity of life, the splendour of Mother Nature, and scything political and social commentary on songs like the title track, a collaboration with British electronic group Alabama 3, as well as the tracks Uranium War and Generation. The album was recorded in Toronto with three different producers, Michael Philip Wojewoda (Barenaked Ladies, Jeff Healey), Chris Birkett (Sinéad O'Connor, Bob Geldof) and Jon Levine (Melissa Etheridge, Serena Ryder).

Sainte-Marie, Buffy - The Pathfinder: burried treasures (CD)
Sainte-Marie, Buffy - The Pathfinder: burried treasures (CD)

The CD is basically a collection of songs that people ask for at concerts 'Up Where We Belong', 'Universal Soldier', 'Until It's Time For You To Go' to rarely heard tracks.

The Pathfinder: Buried Treasures offers with the benefit of hindsight a glimpse into this prolific artist at a time when she was defining the protest music genre that underscores the 1960Œs. Buffy struggled to get airplay at the time, not knowing until 2006 when she discovered that both the CIA and FBI had kept her under surveillance during the Johnson and Nixon administrations, who actively sought to gag many artists in the media who were critical of the government as well as the Vietnam war. This collection of 33 songs is a vibrant travelogue through the mind of an icon. It offers a distinct and refined listening experience that is a must have for any folk, country or blues aficionado fascinated with the music that denotes the complex of inter-related cultural and political trends of 'The Sixties' which continued to develop throughout the 20th century and beyond.

Sainte-Marie, Buffy - Running for the drum (CD)
Sainte-Marie, Buffy - Running for the drum (CD)

On her first album in 13 years, folk icon and Native American activist Buffy Sainte-Marie comes out swinging. She takes on corporate greed over the furious tribal beat of 'No No Keshagesh' and makes effective use of audio samples of pow-wows on both the blistering 'Working for the Government' and the dance-floor-ready 'Cho Cho Fire.' With those three cuts followed by a gorgeous, lilting reworking of her own 'Little Wheel Spin and Spin,' Running for the Drum boasts a simply phenomenal opening sequence. Those songs speak to the depth of Sainte-Marie's focused folk-singer outrage and her still-razor-sharp ear for a memorable pop hook.

The lead track 'Keshagesh' means Greedy Guts. It's what you call a little puppy who eats his own and then wants everybody else's.
