Naturgewalt im positivsten Wortsinn. Es begann alles, anno 2014, als Projekt zur Förderung weiblicher kubanischer Musikerinnen und ist seitdem zu einer der Top Bands im Nordamerikanischen Jazzsektor herangewachsen. On Firm Ground ist das dritte Album – und sicherlich nicht das letzte.
Jane Bunnett & Maqueque are a force of nature. What started out five years ago as a project to record and mentor young brilliant Cuban female musicians, has become one of the top groups on the North American jazz scene. In the last year, they have played in major jazz festivals like Newport and Monterey, been featured on NPR’s programs Jazz Night in America and TIny Desk Concert, were nominated for a Grammy Award for their newest release, Oddara, and, most recently, were voted as one of the top ten jazz groups by the prestigious DownBeat magazine’s critics poll. Maqueque is led by veteran jazz icon Jane Bunnett, who has been a champion of Cuban jazz since before Buena Vista Social club made the sound a global phenomenon. This all female collective pours over an exuberant blend of Afro-Cuban, Jazz Fusion like the world has never seen before. Watching them is a masterclass in hard work, virtuosity and chemistry. On Firm Ground/Tierra Firme this is their third album, and it features all original compositions by the group’s current members which includes Jane Bunnett on flute and soprano saxophone, Melvis Santa, vocals & percussion, Mary Paz, congas & vocals, Dánae Olano, piano, Tailin Marrero, acoustic & electric bass, Yissy García, drums, Maqueque’s newest member, Joanna Majoko, an incredibly soulful vocalist and collaborator, Sacred Steel guitar player and vocalist Nikki D Brown. Inzwischen kennt die internationale Jazz-Community die Geschichte, dass Maqueque aus einer Jam-Session im Cohiba Hotel in Havanna hervorging, bei der die renommierte Jazzmusikerin Jane Bunnett mit jungen Musikerinnen und Komponistinnen zusammenkam, die kürzlich ihren Abschluss am kubanischen Konservatorium gemacht hatten. Über zehn Jahre hinweg hat die Band Gelegenheiten geschaffen, außergewöhnlichen Jazz zu komponieren und aufzuführen, der dieses rein weibliche Ensemble um die ganze Welt geführt hat und sich nicht nur um Spielerinnen aus Kuba, sondern auch um die brillante Sängerin Joanna Majoko (aus Simbabwe) und Musikerinnen erweitert hat aus der Dominikanischen Republik, Lateinamerika, Spanien und dem Libanon. Die Band hat einen Juno Award gewonnen, wurde für einen Grammy nominiert und tourt jährlich durch Europa, Lateinamerika, die USA und Kanada. Das Downbeat Mag hat diese Gruppe als eine der Top Ten Touring Groups des Jahres 2019 ausgewählt. NPR hat die Band in Specials vorgestellt und sie haben ein Tiny Desk Concert gegeben. Auf PLAYING WITH FIRE Die Entwicklung dieses rein kubanischen Kollektivs geht weiter mit der Aufnahme der 19-jährigen Geigerin Daniela Olano, Schwester der Mitbegründerin und Pianistin der Band, Danae Olano, und einer ganz besonderen Gastgitarristin, Donna Grantis. Als Mitglied von 3RDEYEGIRL trat Donna viele Jahre mit dem legendären Künstler Prince auf. Donnas Sound und Texturen haben mich in meiner neuen Musik immer wieder verfolgt, und ich denke, die Endergebnisse sind mehr als schön, sagt Jane Bunnett. Das Ergebnis ist A God Unknown, A Human Race und Sierra.
